Ayers Rock also known as Uluru is located in Australia, the smallest
continent of the world. Ayers Rock is a sandstone rock, referred often
as a monolith, located in the southern part of the Northern territory.
To the Aboriginal people, the Pitjantjatjara and Yankunytjatjara, living
in the area Uluru is sacred. Ayers Rock is also part of the World
Heritage Site.
The name of the sacred place was given by the aboriginal people, which
has no particular meaning. The sacred monolith was name d Ayers Rock by
the surveyor William Gosse in honour of the Chief Secretary of South
Australia, Sir Henry Ayers. Since that day both name are used but for
the outsiders Ayers Rock is most common. Ayers Rock is known to change
colour as different light appear on it at different time of the day.
Ayers Rock is 348 meters high and 863 meters above sea level. About 25
km from Ayers Rock is another rock formation called Kata Tjuta by the
aboriginal but also known as Mount Olga or The Olgas. Ayers Rock is an
inselberg or monadnock which means an isolated rock hill which has been
left after slow erosion from a mountain range. Australia is a wonderful
country with lot of mysterious places to visit.
