It is sometimes called Grote Markt, Grand
Place or Market square and is considered to be as one of the most
beautiful town squares in Europe or may be in the world. The Grand Place
is located in the capital city of Belgium, Brussels. The daughter of
Filip II of Spain, Archduchess Isabella visited Brussels in 1599 and
wrote that she never saw a so beautiful town square. The Grand Place is
the main attraction of the city of Brussels; the area is visited the
whole year around from tourists from the world. As from the 12th century
Brussels became a commercial crossroad sbetween Bruges, France and
Cologne. On the market and in the harbour were sold, French wines,
English wool and German beer. Even the Belgians like to go to the Grand
Place even they have been there many times to have a good Belgian beer
or a coffee on one of the terraces. Beginning of July takes place the
most famous events the Ommegang and the biennial flower carpet. |
