Belgium is a monarchy and the present king
is the head of the state. The current King of the Belgians is Albert II
who succeeded King Baudouin I, his brother who died in 1993. Albert II
was born in Stuyvenberg Castle on 6 June 1934. He is the younger son of
Leopold III and Princess Astrid of Sweden, first wife of Leopold III.
Princess Astrid passed away in 1935 in a car accident in Switzerland. In
July 1959 Albert II married Donna Paola Consiglia Ruffo di Calabria,
born in 1937; they both have three children, Philippe, Duke of Brabant,
born in 1960, Astrid born in 1962 and Laurent born in 1963. It is said
from the Prince Philippe is said to assume the throne after his father
Albert II and if he does, Princess Mathilde will be the Belgian born
queen wife. Belgian press says that the king has an illegitimate
daughter, without any proof. The illegitimate daughter is said to be
Delphine Boël, her mother is the Baroness Sybille de Selys Longchamps
and ex wife from Jacques Boël, a Brussels sculptor.
