Food in Mauritius is not that expensive if you decide to make your shopping on the market place and buy local products. Mauritius is an island and there is a lot of products which are imported and they more expensive than local products. Eating in restaurants is not that expensive. Of course there are also places where food costs a lot but this is usually in hotels or area where lot of tourists are. Mauritian food is mainly spicy and basic food is rice. There is in Mauritius different cultures which mean different type of food. There is Indian food, Chinese food and Muslim food. Vegetables are bought by the Mauritian on the market because it is not that expensive and you get fresh products. On the above picture can be seen mainly Indian food, sweet cakes. Mauritian eat a lot of chicken and beef as a large number of the population are Indians and Muslims on the island, the Creole and Chinese population are used to eat pork too.
