The Pamplemousses Garden also known as Sir
Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Gardens is located in the northern part
of the island and is a lot visited by tourists but also locals. The
botanical garden is located in the small village of Pamplemousses which
in Mauritius also a fruit and is said to have got its name from the
“Plamplemoucier” a citrus plant imported by the Dutch at the time they
visited the island. The garden was in the past the property of the
French governor Mahé de Labournnais, he had his house there and the
actual Pampleplousses Garden was his garden. Pierre Povre was the one
who introduced all sorts of plants in the garden called at this time
“Jardin de Mon Plaisir”. In the garden can also be found the huge water
lily pond which is just wonderful! Walking all along those avenues is
just great and to discover the different palm species and other plant. |
