On the central plateau of Mauritius Island
is found the Trou aux Cerfs volcano. The crater is known as dormant
which means that the volcano can wake up at any time. It is one of the
most visited places of the island, from the top one can have a
magnificent 360° view over the island. Trou aux Cerfs is located in the
town of Curepipe which is located almost in the middle of the island.
Curepipe the name of the town is said having got its name from the
French who during their journey used to stop at this part of the island
to clean their pipes. “cure” which means clean and “pipe” is pipe.
Curepipe is usually humid and colder than other parts on the coastal
areas as it is located on the central plateau. Grand Bassin is an
extinct volcano and is a sacred placed for the Indians from Mauritius.
Another volcano found on the island is Trou Kanaka found in the South of
Mauritius.
